lec has dreamed about working in the medical field since he was a young boy. At Olympic College, he’s making that dream come true.
An RN with an associate’s degree from OC, Alec is putting his skills to work at Kitsap Mental Health’s Crisis Triage Facility while also working toward a bachelor’s degree in nursing at OC.
“Nursing school has shown me that helping others gives me a great sense of satisfaction,” said the first-generation college student. “And working for Kitsap Mental Health has made me passionate about the field of mental health.”
His long-term goal is to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. “I like coming up with a diagnosis. I like solving problems,” he said.
“After I received several scholarships, I realized a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders.”
Alec is on track to graduate debt-free in 2019 and he couldn’t have done it without support from Olympic College Foundation donors. For 2018-19, he received the Ryan Family Nursing Scholarship and the Thomas Graham Scholarship.
“When I first started at Olympic College, I worked various jobs to cover the cost of books, classes and transportation. After I received several scholarships, I realized a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders. I didn’t have as much stress and I could concentrate on my schoolwork,” he said.
“(Donors’) generosity has changed my life.”
